What is a GI? Key concepts
Geographical indication
A name showing that a product comes from a particular place and that its quality or reputation is linked to that place. For example: “Margʻilon atlasi”, “Xorazm qovuni”.
What it gives
A registered name is protected against imitation. It is used by producers in the area who follow the set requirements, which adds value to the product.
Who applies
A producers’ association, a local administration or a company. Applicants for Uzbekistan’s registered GIs include local administrations, branches of the “Hunarmand” association and companies.
Specification
The document describing what the product is, where and how it is made, and how its quality is linked to the area. The application is based on it.
Control plan
Sets out who checks that the product meets the specification, when and how. This is why buyers can trust the product sold under the name.
