What is a geographical indication?
When a product’s name guarantees its origin and quality, it is a geographical indication.
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign showing that a product comes from a specific place and that its quality, reputation or other characteristics come from that place’s nature, climate and the skills of its people. Only producers in that area who follow the agreed requirements may use the name.
What a GI brings
Protection
The name is legally protected against counterfeiting and misuse.
Value
Consumer trust allows a higher price.
Regional development
Jobs, tourism and investment.
Heritage
Traditional methods and know-how pass to the next generation.
Global examples
Champagne (France), Parmigiano Reggiano (Italy), Café de Colombia and Darjeeling tea (India) — products that became global brands thanks to the GI system.
