What is a geographical indication and what does it give producers?
A GI confirms that a product comes from a specific place and that its quality is linked to that place. A short explainer.
A geographical indication is a sign that, through the product’s name, guarantees its origin and its place-linked quality. Only sparkling wine made in France’s Champagne region may be called Champagne.
For producers, a GI brings three things: legal protection of the name against counterfeits; a higher price thanks to consumer trust; and access to export markets and international grants.
Hundreds of Uzbek products — Khorezm melon, Margilan atlas silk, the Andijan skullcap — have this potential. oriGIn Uzbekistan helps producers along this path.
